The big problem is the hypocrisy with Facebook and Twitter, trying to insist that parler needs the same systems they use for "fact checking" and essentially plug into their "world agenda algorithm". Parlers rules are established around the US constitution, and the belief of innocent until proven guilty. So instead of going out and shutting down or using the algorithm to steer opinions or arguments, they take action only when a real offense has occurred and allow debate and discussion to do the rest. Also, while of course the established tech is scared of Parlers rocketing popularity, studies show that not only at the Capitol, but pretty much any "organized gathering" runs through Facebook and its groups. So why should Parler commit to rules they use, when it has not shown to be any more effective in preventing tragedies? Some of the world's most disturbing tragedies have been ran through Facebook live stream and allowed to carry on far longer than it should have. But we don't go out and boycott Facebook, bc they are a "platform" and not a publisher... just like Parler, but Parler actually sticks by the rules and regulations of that classification!!

The problem isn't that a few companies are doing a thing, the problem is these companies are acting as pseudo governments. The solution is actually very, very simple. Companies that provide digital infrastructure services and communication services should be legally considered utilities. That would effect Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, CDNs like Cloudflare, ISPs/RSPs, Google, Apple, Facebook and Twitter. By doing so they will no longer be able to kick people off their networks over policial ideology anymore than a phone company or electricity provider could. That will stop them acting like governments and remove the need for platforms like parler. That doesn't mean people should just be saying whatever they want. Governments need to step up and do their jobs. Public speech on a social media platform should be policed in the same way it would be if the speaker were standing out in public shouting. If you're inciting violence in a public place, that's already a criminal offence. Leave their access to social media alone, just charge them with incitement. If a bunch of people are all inciting violence, treat them as you would a large group of people standing around in public advocating for violence. That too is already a crime. Swearing in public, already a crime. Harassing a stranger in public, already a crime. Etc. Etc. The solution is, we demand governments step up by doing their jobs and updating laws to cover our public digital lives. And demanding law enforcement, enforce those laws once they've been updated. "Report this user" shouldn't go to the platform, it should go to a national cyber crime centre for distribution to the applicable jurisdiction. If we don't do this now, we risk not only losing free speech, but losing democracy altogether as governments become superceded by privately owned corporations.
